Vilma Urbančič-Rovan graduated at Medical Faculty, University of Ljubljana, in 1985. She finished a postgraduate course in diabetology at the University of Zagreb in 1991 and specialist training in internal medicine in Ljubljana in 1993. In 1996, she obtained Master of Science Degree with a thesis Diabetic Foot Infections – Aetiology and treatment. Since 1999, she has studied microvascular flow dynamics and heart rate variability in diabetic patients, in close cooperation with the Group of non-linear dynamics and synergetics at Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Ljubljana. She defended her PhD Thesis Variability of peripheral blood flow, heart rate and breathing in patients with diabetes mellitus in January 2006.
She started an out-patient diabetic foot clinic at University Medical Centre Ljubljana in January 1990. Since 1996, she has organized 14 diabetic foot training courses for nurses and physicians. She is a founding member of Diabetic Foot Study Group of the EASD and a member of the Executive Committe of the DFSG since 2001. Since 2005, she has served as Scientific Secretary of DFSG. She is also an active member of International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot and took part at preparation of the International Consensus on the Diabetic Foot. She was a member of the programme committee of the EASD in 2004 and a member of the editorial board of the publication Diabetes and Foot care – time to act (published by IDF). She is also a member of the Executive Committee of the EURODIALE consortium. She is a secretary of Slovenian Endocrine Association and Coordinator of The Slovenian Diabetic Foot Working Group.
